Indexing Playground

November 19, 2025

10 am Pacific | 11 am Mountain | 12 pm Central | 1 pm Eastern

Join us for ASI’s next Indexing Playground—where indexers get to take a well-earned break from working to chat with other indexers. This informal Zoom gathering offers a chance to connect, compare notes, and swap ideas with peers in a relaxed, small-group setting. Come ready to share, learn, and maybe even laugh about quirks only other indexers would appreciate.

The Zoom call will be divided into four breakout rooms. You can join one and stay or slide in and out of them as you please. The rooms for this playground are:

  • Back of the Book Back in the Day. Tell stories and recollect indexing when AI stood for “AOL Incoming” and Amazon was just a jungle in South America. Bring photos if you have them!
  • Cross-References Gone Wild. Show your wild side and confess to indexing’s best “rules” to break.
  • Indexed & Reviewed. Share interesting books you’ve recently indexed – either because the job itself proved particularly atypical, or because the book was a joy (or nightmare) to read.
  • Recess. A digital sandbox with no agenda

Join us November 19th at 10:00 Pacific time/1:00 Eastern time.

The name Indexing Playground was inspired by Margie Towery (Ten Characteristics of Quality Indexes). She said when she is indexing, she thinks “about creating a playground. Audiences arrive at the playground with diverse knowledge, experience, emotions, goals, and so on. The index serves as the playground in which audiences enter the world of the text.” On our playground, indexers with diverse knowledge will come together to have fun and talk about shared experiences.

If you have an idea for a future playground theme or would like to host a playground, contact Jen Weers or Gwen Henson.
