A recent New York Times article says that, according to Nielsen, nonfiction book sales were moderately lower in 2025 than in 2024. Scholarly publishers have been impacted by the closure of gender and ethnic studies departments and the changes in federal funding for universities. Although it cannot replace the work that indexers do, AI’s use in publishing has drawn the focus of the entire industry. Taken together, these shifts reflect a changing environment for indexers. The times we are living through inspired our theme for the 2026 conference.
“Indexing in Interesting Times: Strategies for Thriving Amid Chaos,” will be presented online on June 10–11, 2026. The conference will focus on sessions designed to help professional indexers hone their skills as well as programs that focus on preparing for an uncertain future. Proactive preparedness—including planning, mitigation, and building resilience—significantly reduces or prevents the impact of these interesting times, often transforming potential catastrophes into opportunities for progress. This conference was designed to help you be prepared.
