Connie Binder is the Recipient of the 2025 Hines Award

The Hines Award committee, comprising Fred Leise, chair, Ina Gravitz, and Diana Witt, is pleased to announce that the award for 2025 is being presented to Connie Binder. As her nomination and supporting letters attest, Connie represents the qualities demanded by the award, namely “continuous, dedicated, and exceptional service to the membership of ASI.”

As her nomination letter states, Connie is always willing to step up to a task for the good of ASI and the indexing profession at large. She has proved this over time, and again this year by chairing our virtual conference.

At the national level, Connie has served on the ASI board as both a director (2011–2013) and as secretary (2013–2014). She served on the Marketing Committee during her first tenure as a director. She has made more than a dozen presentations at the national and chapter level, both inside and outside ASI. She is a skilled presenter who shares knowledge in many areas of the indexing profession. Last year, she presented at the ASI national conference on indexing revised editions. She has also presented three webinars on diverse topics: indexing biographies and memoirs, working with PDFs, and creating an Indexer Locator profile.

She has served as chair of the Mid-and South Atlantic Chapter for several years, and she has also managed the Sports-Fitness SIG since 2011. Connie has also served on the indexing award committee at least once where her knowledge and diplomacy were valued and appreciated. She also served as chair of the committee in 2016.

Beyond her indexing skills and knowledge, Connie brings light-hearted fun to our serious profession. She enthusiastically agreed to be a “contestant” in a game show conference panel last year. At another conference, she wore a skirt made of luggage tags during her presentation on the mobile office.

Attesting to her selfless service, she has been awarded the Kohlrabi eight times.
As one of her letters of support noted, Connie inspires me to lighten up, be a better volunteer, and to celebrate indexing.

Congratulations, Connie!

Thank you to the Hines Award Committee, Fred Leise, committee chair; Ina Gravitz; and Diana Witt.
