Part of ASI’s mission is to advocate for the profession of indexing and to increase awareness of the value of high-quality indexes. One way we accomplish this is through National Indexing Day.
National Indexing Day 2025 takes place on Tuesday, November 18, and ASI has prepared materials to help you easily participate in the celebration. This year’s theme focuses on a topic that has been top of mind for many of us—as reflected in recent lively online list discussions—artificial intelligence (AI) and its role in indexing.
Drawing from the findings of ASI’s AI Committee study, this year’s campaign emphasizes that, currently, AI tools do not produce adequate indexes. Skilled human indexers remain essential to creating accurate, nuanced, and effective indexes. In addition to ASI’s direct outreach to publishers, and associations that represent publishers, freelance editors, and authors, we’re asking members to help extend the message by engaging through your own professional networks.
To make participation simple, we’ve outlined a few steps. Members, log in for details.
As technology evolves, ASI’s AI Committee will continue to review developments and provide updated guidance and resources as needed. Watch for a supplement to the committee’s white paper coming soon. Together, we can demonstrate the continued importance of human expertise in the art and science of indexing.
Happy National Indexing Day to all of my favorite indexers,
Jen Weers
ASI President
