WS03: Getting Started in Indexing

Level: Basic
Getting Started in Indexing isn't easy. You need a good plan, and some confidence. This workshop has two parts: Getting Ready to Get Busy and Finding that First Job.

This workshop was presented at ASI Portland 2009, and at the Chicago/Great Lakes Chapter in 2010. Both times it received rave reviews, for example: "The most helpful seminar I attended was undoubtedly Madge Walls's 'Getting Started.' I feel that the materials included with her presentation are invaluable to any indexer, new or accomplished. If you ever have the chance to attend any event hosted by her, I would urge you to seize the opportunity."

WS04: Double Posting and Its Friends

A new skills improvement workshop.
Double posting means more than just creating another entry it involves understanding when to use cross-references, when to customize the other multiple postings, and how to avoid scattering. Enid will address common mistakes in indexing (including over-indexing which creates extra work for the indexer and under-indexing which creates extra work for the user), as well as show shortcuts for inputting and accuracy in indexing jobs. This workshop, and its extensive handouts, will offer useful tips for both newer and more experienced indexers.

Opening Address: Indexing as Art: Impressionism vs. Precisionism

We'll begin our conference on the appreciation of indexing and indexes with an exploration of the creative similarities between the indexes we write and different art genres. There are distinct parallels between the indexing approach to any particular text and painting styles employed by artists to convey content and meaning. From portraiture to impressionism and precisionism, our brief comparison of indexing and artistic styles will help us better appreciate the complexity and creativity of our indexing endeavors.

How low? Do you work weekends or long hours? Why or why not? Are there certain subject areas that you will not accept work in? Why? What if you disagree with the authors point of view? In this interactive workshop youll hear not only the presenters viewpoints -- youll hear other indexers ideas and answers as well.

Seminar 5: Choices in Indexing Main Characters
The main character in a biography offers a variety of challenges for indexers. Numerous approaches to creating entries exist and the indexer must decide which approach suits the work being indexed. The indexer might choose to create limited sub-headings, or, not even create an entry for the main character. The entry might be sorted chronologically, alphabetically, or grouped into themes. In a practical discussion, drawing on examples of real life indexes, we will sort through the many options together. Come prepared to participate and discuss as we search for workable, user-friendly solutions.

Seminar 9: Peer Recognition Awards

Awards programs within professional societies can not only recognize individual achievement, increase member involvement, and contribute to membership retention but can also create positive public relations and press release announcements within the broader publishing community. At present, ASI has only the Wilson Award for recognizing excellence in indexing. At the 2011 conference a judging process was described that could be used as the basis for a peer review indexing award program to compliment the Wilson program by creating a new opportunity for increased index recognition. This seminar will be a follow-up to the 2011 presentation and is designed to provide guidance, instructions, and handouts to SIGs and Chapters that might be interested in considering such an award program.

Peer Review: Guidelines and Practice

Peer Review: Guidelines and Practice
Peer Review is a terrific learning tool for new and experienced indexers.Meeting informally, perhaps once a month, members share their work andreceive feedback. As we work in such isolation, peer review groups offer afriendly atmosphere in which to buff up skills, learn new techniques, andget encouragement from your indexing peers. Guidelines for an effective Peer Review group will be presented, and we'll critique an index as an example of how a peer review group might work.

Seminar 10: eBooks and Indexes

Level: All
Search is a complex process, but the Search function in eReaders is still fairly primitive. Indexes can provide the reader with pre-analysis of a text, but they are not being implemented well (or at all) in eBooks and eContent. This means the reader loses a navigation tool that could help at several stages of research, and the eBook loses potentially-useful semantic metadata that could be implemented and used in coming versions of ePub and more powerful readers. In this session, wel review what happens in the process of searching, and three methods of offering readers additional tools to help them navigate content and aboutness. A prototype of Search + Index will be demo-ed, and we will end the session with an EReader device "petting zoo," so that you can experience the current state of indexed non-fiction on eReaders, look at Amazon's XRay, and play with books on an iPad.

Seminar 11: Indexing Standards

Level: Intermediate
What would it mean to have recognized standards in the profession of indexing? Where do you point your clients when they question you about a practice? Is the Chicago Manual a true guide for indexers or just one presss preferences? How would a set of standards benefit professional indexers and increase their recognition and appreciation by those who hire them? How would standards serve to improve indexes and assist the publishing profession? These and other issues will be discussed by two experienced indexers, Kate Mertes and Enid Zafran, drawing on their years in the field both in training and educating indexers as well as from dealings with a range of clients.

Seminar 19: What Constitutes a Passing Mention

Level: All
When we were trained as indexers, we learned to avoid indexing passing mentions terms with no significant discussions around them. Another way a passing mention is defined is as an aside. Many of us were taught that terms should not be picked up unless there are two sentences of discussion pertaining to that topic where the term resides. But is this true in all cases? What about the context and the audience? Are there exceptions? Judi Gibbs and Cheryl Landes will answer these questions in this session and provide some guidelines on how to judge terms as passing mentions, based on their experiences in indexing a wide variety of subjects. They will also provide a cornucopia of examples. Come prepared to discuss and compare approaches, because we want to hear your perspectives, too! After all, we learn from each other.

Self-Guide Bike Tour

If you are more inclined to head off in small groups or get some quality alone time, then enjoy your own bike tour of the area. Riding a bike has a number of advantages over other forms of transportation. You'll move slower, no doubt, but with that slowness comes an increased awareness of your surroundings, a chance to get some fresh air and exercise, and the sense of accomplishment that comes with a great ride.

For rides along the region's scenic waterfront, coastal bike paths also provide varied opportunities for cyclists of all skill levels. The 27 miles of winding, paved bike paths that circle Mission Bay are car-free and provide a favorable location for family bike rides, leisurely biking, and sightseeing. Cyclists can pick a range of distances along the bay, or branch off on side trips to Pacific Beach, La Jolla, and Ocean Beach. You don't need to be in great shape or be a regular bike-rider to enjoy this opportunity. Go at your own pace in any direction you wish. Stop when you want to. Ride when you want to.

Bikes will be available for pick up at 4 pm on Saturday. Bike rental is $30.You will be able to keep them overnight (the hotel will provide a place to keep them) in case you want an early ride on Sunday.

Old Town Trolley Tour

Join your friends and/or take your family on a sightseeing tour that highlights the best San Diego attractions. Old Town Trolley Tours has been operating for 20 years, providing colorful anecdotes, humorous stories, and well-researched historical information. • Once home to San Diego's most pioneering visionaries, the Gaslamp Quarter is considered to be the historic heart of San Diego. Today's Gaslamp Quarter offers a dazzling spectacle with 16 ½ blocks of buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Buildings. Exquisite Victorian commercial buildings and many other architectural styles are a visual delight.
  • Balboa Park is where the arts, culture, and history of San Diego come together to create a 1,200 acre wonderland filled with unforgettable experiences for people of every age.

The tour costs $30 per person. Sign up early to ensure your space on the trolley.
