Indexes and Search Engines
for Internet Resources

Check out these tools for searching the internet. (For an overview of issues involved in indexing web sites, see our section on Web Indexing.)

Choose from:

Browsable lists allow you to find resources by browsing subject hierarchies

Search engines find occurrences of terms in the text of web pages

Metasearch engines use several search engines for your search and return all the results

Specialized search tools focus on specific subjects or types of resources

Search engine guides and evaluations guide you in using the best search engine for your specific search

If you would like to read more about search engines and how they work, please check out our search engine technology section.

BROWSE LISTS

  • dmoz open directory project: a human-edited directory of the Web.
  • Galaxy: you can browse or search this list of web sources.
  • Yahoo: browsable list of web resources. A few items have descriptions, but most of the browsing is guess-work.

SEARCH ENGINES

METASEARCH ENGINES

These sites help you by searching multiple search engines such as Yahoo or Open Text, but you may lose some search query tools when you use them.
