ASI Leader Takes Indexing Into the Classroom

Wheat Ridge, CO - October 4, 2006 The American Society of Indexers (ASI) announces a new workshop designed to show educators and media specialists how to teach students to use indexes. Teaching Children and Teens to Use Indexes is a half-day workshop being offered November 5, at the Mount Holyoke College campus in South Hadley, MA. The presenter is Heather Hedden, president of the New England Chapter of ASI.

Studies have shown that many children do not fully understand all the features and benefits of an index. The workshop is designed to improve research skills among the younger generation in today's information age. It will provide an overview of index features and demonstrate techniques for using book indexes, periodical indexes in print and online, website indexes, site maps, and online taxonomies (topic trees). Librarians, media specialists and educators who work with children and young adults in grades 3-12 are encouraged to attend this event. See more information or register here. You can also register by contacting the Simmons College Graduate School of Library and Information Science at 617-521-2800.

Hedden, who also teaches an online workshop in creating website indexes, has also taught index use in public schools. She indexes books in the social sciences for adults and secondary school students through her business, Hedden Information Management, Carlisle, MA.

Be sure to watch for more indexing workshops in the future, including those held in conjunction with ASI's 40th Annual Conference, May 23–26, 2007, in Philadelphia, PA. Details coming soon.
