Kate Mertes earns award for The Church Historian's Press title
The American Society of Indexing announces that the recipient of the 2015 ASI/EIS Publishing Award for Excellence in Indexing is Kate Mertes for her index to The Joseph Smith Papers: Documents , Volume 3 (February 1833 -- March 1834), published by The Church Historian's Press. (Volume editors: Gerrit J. Dirkmaat et al.; General editors Ronald K. Esplin et al.)
This extensive collection of eighty-eight documents (contained within 600 pages) provides a fascinating glimpse into the challenges and formative events of this period. The documents range from church meeting minutes, Joseph Smith's revelations and letters, architectural and city plans, priesthood licenses, and legal documents, to an effort to classify the scriptures by topic. Kate’s index stands as an exemplar both for its meticulous content but also for the elegant formatting. It serves as a true model of how it is possible to create something both beautiful and supremely useful at the same time.
Kate will receive the ASI/EIS Award, including a plaque and an award check, at the ASI Conference Award Luncheon on Friday, May 1, 2015, at the Seattle Motif Hotel, Seattle, Washington.
The ASI/EIS Award also recognizes the contribution of the publisher to the quality of an index, and the publisher, The Church Historian's Press, will also receive a plaque.
The ASI/EIS Award (originally the ASI/H.W. Wilson Award) was established to recognize the normally anonymous indexers and the publishers who provide high-quality indexes to serve their readers.
As they create indexes this year, indexers are encouraged to consider the criteria for the award and whether a book they have indexed would be suitable for future submission.
